Quest Pro is Meta/Oculus’s cutting-edge VR headset with controllers that enable never before possible interactions. The Quest Pro Controllers, which optically self-track (SLAM tracking), feature high-resolution sensors in the index trigger grip and thumb-pad that when coupled with haptic feedback enable fine-motor control actions such as pinching and picking up small objects. Additionally, the Quest Pro Controllers feature a removable lanyard that can be swapped with a pressure sensitive stylus tip for sketching and whiteboarding in VR.
As the engineering lead of an interdisciplinary team of engineers and designers, I was responsible for the research, design, and implementation of the technology responsible for the thumb pressure sensing and pressure sensing stylus. For the thumb pressure project, I led the team through research, concepting, technology evaluations, benchtop prototyping, and integrated prototyping for user testing, including building of our own custom VR capture setup in order to conduct user testing of the sensor implementations in VR. For the stylus project, I led the design and engineering effort to determine how to integrate a removable, pressure-sensitive stylus into the existing controller design, including the mechanisms responsible for the removable lanyard and stylus connection.
